First, you’ll need to start your fire. Depending on the wood you use, it may take 45 minutes to an hour to generate enough hot coals for cooking.

Once your fire is burning, you’ll want to keep an eye on it and add more fuel as needed to help it burn longer and create more embers. This will increase the temperature of your fire and provide a more even heat for cooking.

Next, choose a cooking surface that can handle the intensity of the flames. Aluminum foil is a good option, but avoid using it when the fire is above 1200 degF (where aluminum starts to melt). Cast iron skillets, dutch ovens and pots are also popular, as they can handle high temperatures without burning the outside of your food or cooking the inside unevenly.

Another common camping cooking surface is a campfire grate or tripod. These stand over the fire and hold skillets or pans above the hot coals, which helps to keep the outside of your food from getting burned or cooking unevenly.

For the best results, you’ll want to cook directly over the coals when your fire is at the right temperature. This will give you an evenly cooked meal that is smoky and flavorful, without charring the outside of your food or cooking the inside too fast.

In addition to a campfire grate or tripod, you’ll need to have a variety of other equipment with you when you’re cooking over the fire. Leather gloves are an excellent choice for protecting your hands from the flames, as they have a lot of grip and will prevent you from accidentally falling over or getting burned.

Some people also like to bring a pie iron, which can be used like a sandwich iron and for cooking food over the fire. A pie iron has long steel and wood handles that allow you to hold it over the fire without getting burned.

When you’re ready to put out your campfire, make sure to extinguish all embers and the hot coals by adding water or sand. If you forget to do this, the hot coals and embers will continue to heat up, resulting in burnt food or a dangerous fire.

To keep your food from sticking to the bottom of your camp pot, try rubbing the bottom with dish soap before you put it in the fire. This will remove the black film that tends to build up on camp pots, making them easier to wash off.
